Rudolstadt sits in a wide bend of the Saale, under the Baroque palace its princes built on the hill above the old town. In the summer of 1788 the writer Friedrich Schiller lodged here, fell for a local woman, and met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for the first time in the house where she lived — a meeting that grew, six years later in Jena, into one of German literature's defining friendships. Every July the town fills again for the Rudolstadt-Festival, Germany's largest folk and world-music festival.[1]
A princely seat above the Saale, until 1918
The Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt line built its Baroque palace, the Heidecksburg, on the hill above the town and ruled from it until 1918. Rudolstadt is today the seat of the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, with just under twenty-five thousand residents settled along a wide bend of the Saale.[2]
The summer that changed German literature, 1788–1794
Schiller spent the summer of 1788 in Rudolstadt, drawn by Charlotte von Lengefeld, whose family had lived in a house on what is now the Schillerstraße since 1775. On 7 September that year, in that same house, he met Goethe for the first time. The two men kept their distance at first; six years later, in Jena, the acquaintance became the friendship that shaped Weimar Classicism.
A festival town, since 1991
Since 1991 Rudolstadt has hosted the Rudolstadt-Festival, Germany's largest folk and world-music festival, running from the first Thursday in July to the Sunday after.[1]
