Goethe's manuscript estate passes to Grand Duchess Sophie, 15 April 1885
The most valuable literary estate in Germany became one woman's private property, and she gave it away the same day.
On 15 April 1885 the handwritten estate of Goethe passed to Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, sole heir under the will of Walther, the poet's last surviving grandson. She was sixty-one years old, and the decision she took on receiving it is why the papers are in a public archive rather than a family vault.
One sentence, and the whole outcome
The archive still quotes what she said: „Ich habe geerbt, und Deutschland und die Welt soll mit mir erben“[1] — I have inherited, and Germany and the world shall inherit with me. Everything that follows is the working out of that sentence. There was no obligation on her; a grand ducal house that had just been handed Goethe's manuscripts could have kept them, shown them selectively, and lost nothing by it. She treated the inheritance as a trust the moment it arrived.
What it set in motion
The estate needed an edition and a building, and it got both. Sophie initiated the Sophien- or Weimarer Ausgabe, which appeared in four sections and 143 volumes between 1887 and 1919.[1] In 1889 Schiller's descendants of the von Gleichen-Rußwurm family gave his estate to the same institution, and the archive acquired the double name it still carries. The building followed, inaugurated on 28 June 1896[2] — Germany's first research-based literary archive, which is the form her sentence finally took.
