The peaceful revolution in Weimar
Weimar's 1989 does not run to the familiar national calendar. It began at a rigged-looking election count in May, gathered in the churches in October, and reached the street late — on Tuesdays.
May: watching the count
At the local election of 7 May 1989, residents systematically observed the counting of votes for the first time.[1] It is an unglamorous beginning and a telling one: the first act of the revolution here was not a demonstration but arithmetic, carried out by people who had decided to check a number the state had always simply announced.
October: the churches
Looking back, the city dates the opening of the peaceful upheaval in Weimar to 4 October 1989. Pastor Erich Kranz preached on the 4th and 5th, calling people to take responsibility, and the gatherings were indoors — the parish house of the Jakobskirche had long given young people looking for an alternative a room with a certain freedom in it.
The demonstrations were on Tuesdays
The first large street demonstration came only at the end of October, later than in Leipzig or Dresden, and it fell on a Tuesday rather than the Monday that has since become the shorthand for the whole autumn. Weimar was neither early nor typical, and the town's account does not pretend otherwise.
December: the files
On 5 December 1989 the destruction of the Stasi files in Weimar was stopped.[1] Of everything in that autumn this is the act with the longest reach: what was seized that day is the reason the period can be researched at all rather than merely remembered.
