Christiane von Goethe

Biography
She met Goethe on 12 July 1788, handing him a petition on behalf of her unemployed brother. She was twenty-three, born in Weimar in 1765 into a family without money or standing; he had just come back from Italy. What followed was eighteen years of the town disapproving, and then a marriage.
Eighteen years before the wedding, 1788–1806
She moved into his house and stayed, without the standing a wife would have had. Their son August was born in 1789 and lived; four more children, born in 1791, 1793, 1795 and 1802, died within days of birth. They married on 19 October 1806, in the sacristy of the court church — eighteen years after the petition in the park, and ten years before her death. Weimar society, which had spent those years pointedly not receiving her, was thereby obliged to.
The girl from the flower factory, corrected
For most of two centuries she was written about as a pretty, uneducated girl of no background, and the twentieth century largely repeated it. The Neue Deutsche Biographie of 2020 takes that apart: it credits her with a bright and entirely natural intelligence and says plainly that she was not thoroughly uneducated.
What she actually did, 1788–1816
She ran the household, including through Goethe's long absences, and stayed steady through it. The NDB's summary is that she understood herself as nothing other than his wife, the mother of his child and his companion — which can be read as a small life or as an accurate account of what the period allowed a woman of her background to be. She died in Weimar in 1816.
