The Dornburger Schlösser are three castles on one limestone bluff over the Saale — a medieval keep, a Renaissance residence and a Rococo pleasure palace — linked by terraced garden paths with views into the valley below.
Three buildings, three eras, 1522–1747
The Old Castle is the oldest and stands furthest north, built by 1522 and enlarged between 1562 and 1573. The Renaissance castle, the second-oldest of the three, was put up in 1539. The Rococo palace, youngest and standing between the other two, was begun in 1732, its main building finished by 1747. Terraced paths thread the bluff between them, opening onto the Saale valley.[1]
Goethe's summer of 1828
Grand Duke Carl August died in June 1828, and Goethe left Weimar for the Renaissance castle, living in its Bergstube — its mountain room — from 7 July to 11 September. He worked on correspondence and on geological and meteorological notes, and wrote the poems that carry Dornburg's name.[2]

Goethe's retreat here in 1828 was written up in verse that carries the movement's late voice, a generation after Weimar Classicism's central years.
For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
