The GoetheStadtMuseum occupies the Amtshaus on Ilmenau's market square, in the rooms Goethe used as his official residence across the 26 visits he made here between 1776 and 1831.[1] Its permanent exhibition covers the administrator who reopened the town's mines and reformed its taxes — not the poet.[2]
An official's rooms, not a poet's, 1776–1831
Goethe held rooms on the first floor of the Amtshaus during his visits, serving as head of Ilmenau's mining commission and its tax commission. The mines had stood closed since 1739; under his direction they were reopened. The town's finances were in disorder; he set about reorganising them. Twenty-six stays, 1776 to 1831, are the tally of an administrator who kept coming back to one district for over half a century.[1]
What the exhibition shows
On around 180 square metres, the permanent exhibition sets out this administrative side of Goethe's life alongside the town's own craft history — Ilmenau porcelain, glass and toys — in the same building where the decisions were actually made.[2]
