The lower of Kranichfeld's two castles, first documented in 1147 as a small medieval keep and now best known for the open-air stage in its grounds. The town is candid about what a visitor will find: an interesting and popular destination, but one that is not staffed continuously.
1147, and the Schwarzburg pledge
The castle is first documented in 1147 as a small medieval keep — four years after the town's own first mention. By 1233 it was in the pledged possession of the counts of Schwarzburg, and it changed hands repeatedly after that. It is the older half of the arrangement that gave a small town two castles and, from 1454, two lords who did not get on.
A private owner, then the town
In 1906 Johanna Rauchfuß became the castle's new owner — a private proprietor for a medieval castle, which is more common in Thuringia than visitors expect. The town's timeline then records the castle passing into the possession of the town of Kranichfeld in 1989 and being returned to the town in 2002.
The stage the locals built
In 1953 an open-air stage was built in the castle grounds with the active help of the local heritage association — not a municipal project but a volunteer one, in the first decade of the GDR. It is still what the castle is used for: festivals, concerts, theatre, musicals, dance shows and folk festivals. The east gate was widened in 2025.

What is charged depends on the event; the castle is not run as a museum with a standing admission.
