Schloss Elisabethenburg is the Baroque palace Duke Bernhard I built between 1682 and 1692 as the residence of Saxony-Meiningen,[1] and today it holds 52 rooms across 3,400 square metres of collections, from Rococo and Historicist period interiors to centuries of paintings and the region's music and theatre history.[1]
Built for a new duchy, 1682–1692
Duke Bernhard I, founder of the House of Saxony-Meiningen, had the palace built between 1682 and 1692 as the central residence and seat of representation for his new dynasty.[1] It stands today as one of Meiningen's defining landmarks of Baroque residence architecture.[2]
The Meininger Museen's collections
The Meininger Museen now fill the main wing: 52 rooms across 3,400 square metres, holding historic interiors from Rococo through Historicism alongside paintings spanning several centuries and collections on the region's musical and theatrical history.[1]
