Schloss Neuenburg

About This Site

Schloss Neuenburg is the castle Ludwig der Springer built around 1090 to secure the eastern edge of his lands, the sister castle of his Wartburg in the west, standing high over Freyburg with a Romanesque double chapel on the Straße der Romanik.

The Wartburg's sister in the east, from 1090

Ludwig der Springer, the Thuringian count who founded the Wartburg, had the Neuenburg built around 1090 to hold his territory's eastern edge as the Wartburg held its west. His descendants, the landgraves of Thuringia, expanded it through the twelfth and thirteenth centuries into one of the largest castles of the age.[1]

The double chapel and what else is here, 1170s–1190s

The Romanesque double chapel, built in the 1170s–1190s, is a stop on the Straße der Romanik.[2] The castle's Fürstensaal, a small wine museum in the cellar vault, the old dining hall and a changing programme of exhibitions fill out a visit, with a view from the ramparts over Freyburg and the Unstrut valley.
