A brine spa in the Ilm valley whose one genuinely original idea is acoustic: under the Liquid Sound concept the music plays not only above the water but beneath it, so that you hear it through your own skull while floating in salt water.

Music under the water

The operator's claim for the place is a technical one, and it is the reason to come: "Dank dem einmaligen Liquid Sound®-Konzept ertönt die Musik nicht nur über, sondern auch unter Wasser." You float in warm brine in a domed hall and the sound arrives through the water rather than the air. The house sets its three ingredients out plainly — "Die natürlichen Verbündeten heißen Wärme, Heilwasser und Klang" — and presents the idea as an EXPO world project, "Liquid Sound in der Toskana des Ostens".

Club culture meets bath culture

On the first Saturday of every month the spa runs the Liquid Sound Club: "Clubkultur trifft Badekultur", with DJs playing electronic sets and live music as a regular part of it, above and below the surface. Entry to the club is included in the ordinary spa admission, which makes it one of the stranger nights out in Thuringia — a dancefloor you lie down in.

Why a spa at all, in this valley, 1554–2004

The water is the town's oldest business. Sulza boiled salt from 1554, discovered in the nineteenth century that the brine could be sold as a cure rather than as salt — its own chronicle calls 1847 the birth year of the salt bath — and has been a state-recognised salt spa since 2004. The therme is the modern end of a trade four and a half centuries long.
