Weimar Haus
About This Site
A privately run experience museum on the Schillerstraße that stages five thousand years of the town's history as a walk through built sets with lifelike figures, light and sound. Its own list of scenes runs from prehistory and the Thuringian kingdom through the Middle Ages to Weimar Classicism, the duchess's round table, Napoleon and Goethe's Faust. The figures, the city adds, come from the workshops of Madame Tussauds.
Five thousand years in staged scenes
An Erlebnismuseum — a museum built to be walked through: elaborately staged sets, lifelike figures, light and sound effects, and five thousand years of the town's history as one journey. The scenes run from the early period and the kingdom of Thuringia through the Middle Ages to Weimar Classicism, the Tafelrunde — Anna Amalia's round table — Napoleon, and Goethe's Faust. The operator is the Neue Geschichtserlebnis GmbH, run by Detlef Lange and Annette Veit.
Before you go
Open every day, with shorter hours on Sunday; tickets are priced for adults, children and families. Where the town's other museums belong to the Klassik Stiftung, this one is privately run — a different kind of museum for a different kind of afternoon, and a good one for children.

Historical periods
Weimar Classicism is one of the museum's staged epochs, between the Middle Ages and the duchess's round table.
For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
