About e-werk Weimar
A power station that stopped making electricity and started being used for other things. The industrial architecture is the draw for anyone staging work here: the National Theatre plays open-air at the e-werk in summer, and the halls take productions that a proscenium would flatten. Inside it is a historic tram depot, and inside that is one of the most serious artworks in the city.
Konzert für Buchenwald, since 1999
Rebecca Horn made the installation in 1999, the year Weimar was European Capital of Culture, and it has been in the tram depot ever since. Used musical instruments and their leather cases are stacked along a short length of rail; a cart from the Buchenwald camp itself runs on the track and strikes a wall, throwing electrical arcs. The Klassik Stiftung calls the work inseparable from Weimar, and means both the subject and the address. Entry is free.
