About Restaurant “Zum güldenen Zopf”

Restaurant „Zum güldenen Zopf“ is a posting inn from 1541 that is a restaurant again, cooking classic Thuringian food from ingredients said to come mostly from the country immediately around it. It opens in the evening on most days, with a long Sunday split between lunch and dinner, and it is shut on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Standing since 1541, and reopened in 2016

The building dates to 1541,[1] when it was a posting inn on the road, and it survived the fire that took much of Blankenhain in 1742 — it was rebuilt afterwards, changed its name for the best part of two centuries, and took the present one back in 1936. Then it stopped. The Grafe family bought the building in 2015 and opened it again in 2016, which is the part that matters if you are deciding whether to drive out: what you would be visiting is a very old house in its first decade of a new life, not a continuously running inn.

Questions visitors ask

It dates to 1541,[1] when it was a posting inn on the road; it survived a fire that took much of Blankenhain in 1742 and was rebuilt afterwards.
Is it a continuously running historic inn?
No — after taking its present name back in 1936 it stopped trading at some point, and stood until the Grafe family bought the building in 2015 and reopened it in 2016. It's a very old house in its first decade of a new life, not an unbroken one.
What does the kitchen serve?
Classic Thuringian cooking, from ingredients said to come mostly from the surrounding country.
