Weimar is European Capital of Culture
The EU named Weimar European Capital of Culture in 1993 and the town held the title in 1999, with around a thousand events.
Six years' notice
The designation came in 1993 and the title was held in 1999.[1] The city's own chronicle records the two as separate entries, six years apart — which is how much warning a town of this size was given, though the chronicle says nothing about what it did with them.
A thousand events
The chronicle gives the year as a "Kulturstadtjahr mit rund 1.000 Veranstaltungen".[1] It fell at the end of a decade in which the same chronicle records two UNESCO inscriptions: the Bauhaus buildings in 1996 and the classical sites in 1998.
