Ettersburg Castle and Park

Am Schloß 1, 99439 Ettersburg

About This Site

A hunting lodge and summer seat on the north side of the Ettersberg, begun in the early eighteenth century by Duke Wilhelm Ernst and finished by his nephew Ernst August. The ducal family used it as exactly that — somewhere to hunt and spend the summer — until they abdicated in 1918.

Anna Amalia's circle in the woods

Anna Amalia gathered a literary and musical circle around herself here, giving the Weimar court's intellectual life a second address — out of town, in a forest.[1]

A park laid out by a later duke

The romantic landscape garden is not from the classical decades at all. It was largely shaped from 1842 under Carl Alexander, when the architect Carl Eduard Petzold redesigned the parterre and laid out a six-hectare park, along with the Pücklerschlag — a meadow furnished with staggered groups of trees arranged like stage flats.[1]

What happened to it afterwards

After 1919 the buildings were put to a run of institutional uses, among them a state education home and an officers' school; in 1968 the property passed to a predecessor of the Klassik Stiftung, and since 2005 it has been leased and run as an event venue.[1] The park is open all year and free.

In Weimar's history

Historical periods

A summer seat of the classical court, though its famous park belongs to the century after.

For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.

In Weimar's history

Twice in three years the World Heritage Committee put Weimar on its list: the Bauhaus buildings on 7 December 1996, and the eleven monuments of Classical Weimar on 2 December 1998.

Palace and park form one of the eleven monuments of Classical Weimar since 1998.
