UNESCO World Heritage Day
A day for the two inscriptions Weimar holds — the classical ensemble, and the Bauhaus.
The next edition has not been announced yet
Weimar holds two UNESCO inscriptions, and the heritage day in June is given over to both of them at once.
The older inscription, from 1998, is a scatter of properties across the town and out into the countryside: Goethe's house and Schiller's, the Wittumspalais, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, the Stadtschloss, the town church with the Herder house and the old Gymnasium, the Fürstengruft with the historic cemetery, the Park an der Ilm with the Roman House inside it, Goethe's garden house and its garden, and three palaces with their parks — Belvedere with its orangery, Tiefurt and Ettersburg.
The second inscription is shared with Dessau and Bernau, and Weimar's contribution to it is a single house: the Haus am Horn, the only building the Bauhaus completed here. Two inscriptions in one small town, a century and a half apart in what they stand for, is the oddity the day exists to hold together.
For the rest of the year these places are a dozen separate museums with separate tickets and separate opening hours, and most visitors see three or four of them. The heritage day is the one occasion in the calendar that treats the whole of it as one subject — which is, after all, how UNESCO listed it.

Frauenplan 1, 99423 Weimar
The house on the Frauenplan, where Goethe lived for the last fifty years of his life, is one of the properties the ensemble names.
Schillerstraße 12, 99423 Weimar
Schiller's house on the Schillerstraße, where he finished Wilhelm Tell, is inscribed alongside Goethe's.
Am Palais 3, 99423 Weimar
Anna Amalia's dowager palace — the rooms her Round Table actually met in — is named in the ensemble.
Platz der Demokratie 1, 99423 Weimar
The ducal library, Goethe among its directors, is inscribed for the Rococo Hall at its heart.
Burgplatz 4, 99423 Weimar
The ducal residence itself is one of the properties the ensemble names — the seat the classical town was governed from.
Herderplatz, 99423 Weimar
The inscription takes the town church, the Herder house and the old Gymnasium as a single property — the parish Herder preached in and is buried under.
