About Aktionstage in Weimar
On International Women's Day in March and again on the Buß- und Bettag in November, the Klassik Stiftung opens its museums and exhibitions without charge, and adds special openings, guided tours and things to join in with.
Two days chosen out of the tourist season
Neither date falls in the months when Weimar fills up: free admission in March or November means the houses are affordable and quiet at the same time. Opening hours vary by house.
What is actually open
The museums and places that keep winter hours, with thematic exhibitions running from Weimar Classicism through to modernism, and guided tours that follow Goethe, Anna Amalia and Nietzsche through the town. For a first visit this is a good deal more coherent than picking houses off a map.
And one thing that is not a museum visit
Students of the Bauhaus-Universität perform their own work on the theme of the staircase at the Museum Neues Weimar. It is the kind of item that tells you the day is aimed at residents as much as visitors — nobody schedules a student performance piece for the coach parties.
