About Wiedereröffnung des Stadtschlosses

The Stadtschloss has been shut for a long restoration and opens again over a weekend in early October — three days, free of charge, and the first chance in years to walk into the building the classical town was actually governed from.

Not a routine museum date

The residence sits at the centre of the World Heritage ensemble and is the one building in it that was a seat of power rather than a house, a library or a park. It has also been behind hoarding long enough that a whole generation of visitors has never been inside. Weimar reopening its palace is a different order of event from Weimar opening an exhibition.

Two new permanent exhibitions

One is on Weimar Classicism and reads the palace as the seat of power that shaped how the classical period came to be remembered — an argument, not a display of furniture. The other is on the building's own history, with archaeological finds and the life of the court. The poets' rooms are shown on guided tours.

Free now, ordinary afterwards

Admission is free across all three days, and the palace stays open later than it normally will. From the following week it settles into ordinary opening hours and an ordinary ticket, with one weekday closure — so the difference between arriving on the closing day of the weekend and arriving the day after is not a small one.

The point of the theme year

The foundation calls 2026 its year of "Öffnen" — opening — and this weekend is its climax. That is a neat piece of programming when the thing being opened has been closed for most of a decade, and it is worth planning a visit around: the palace will still be there in November, but it will cost money and it will not feel like this.
