Tag des offenen Denkmals
13 September 2026
One day in September
The German open-monument day, kept in Weimar under the year's national motto — free, ticketed and limited.
Make it public! The ABC of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library
A library explaining itself, alphabetically, in the building where the work actually happens.
Now on, until 30 October 2026
30 April – 30 October 2026
An exhibition arranged as an alphabet of the ideas that define the Anna Amalia Library, laid out as a walk through its study centre — and free.
Visitors queue for the Rococo Hall and leave. The study centre is where the library is a working institution rather than a room to look at, and this exhibition uses it as its own subject: what a public collection is for, how it is digitised, and how readers are let into decisions that used to be made over their heads.
Ordering the show A to Z lets it put digitisation next to participation next to whatever else begins with the same letter, without pretending there is a single narrative. For an institution whose whole business is ordering things so they can be found again, choosing the most arbitrary order there is has a certain wit to it.
It follows the study centre's renovation, and it is free — an institution that was rebuilt after the 2004 fire choosing to explain itself rather than display its treasures. If you have already done the Rococo Hall, this is the more interesting half of the same library.
