European Restoration Day
Conservators open their workbenches — the part of a collection's life the public never sees.

18 October 2026
A collection is mostly maintenance, and on this Sunday the people who do it open the workbenches the public never sees.
Someone consolidates flaking paint, washes and relines paper, stabilises furniture, and decides what a damaged object is allowed to become. None of that happens in the rooms a visitor walks through, and almost none of it is visible in the result — a well-restored object looks like an object nobody touched.
One is a department for conservation, restoration and art technology under the museums directorate; the other is a collections-preservation unit at the Anna Amalia Library — the department that had to answer the 2004 fire. On the day, conservators give access to those workplaces and explain what they are doing and why.
Every restoration turns on a question with no settled answer: how much intervention is too much. Leave the damage and you preserve the history; remove it and you preserve the object. This is the one day of the year on which that argument is put to visitors rather than resolved quietly among specialists.
