a.gon Theater München stages the Czech-German fairy-tale film by Václav Vorlíček and František Pavlíček. Karel Svoboda's film music stays; Thomas Zaufke writes the new songs, to a book by Katrin Lange with lyrics by Edith Jeske. The story is the one the film fixed: Aschenbrödel on her dead father's estate under a stepmother who hates her, three magic nuts, the animals who help her, and a prince who falls for a veiled girl at the dance and is left holding a shoe. The company makes one claim for its stage version worth repeating — that this Cinderella is not merely romantic but self-possessed and capable — which is the argument for seeing it rather than rewatching the film. The tour sells itself as what Christmas feels like live, and it reaches Weimar in January.
