About congress centrum weimarhalle

The biggest room in Weimar stands at the edge of the historic centre and does two jobs at once. The wood-lined Großer Saal seats twelve hundred in rows; behind it are a small hall of 240, two wing halls and a seminar building. Congresses fill it on weekdays and the Staatskapelle's symphony concerts have been at home in it from the first day — which is why a building marketed as a conference centre is also one of the town's principal concert halls.

Built in fifteen months, opened in 1932

Max and Günther Vogler designed the first Weimarhalle and it went up in fifteen months, and it was timed: it opened in 1932, the year of Goethe's hundredth anniversary of death, which is the sort of anniversary this town builds towards.

A century happened to it

After the National Theatre was bombed out the hall took over as that theatre's stage for three years. From 1952 the Soviet army held the building as its Haus der Offiziere, and the town did not get it back until 1974, reopening it after renovation the following year.

Demolished, and built again

The structure eventually failed its own engineers: grave defects were established, the old hall came down in 1997, and a new one went up from 1998. The congress centrum neue weimarhalle opened on 26 June 1999.
