The house sells the evening as pure cinema — music that has already lent its weight to more than one film scene — and the programme carries it: Vaughan Williams's The Wasps overture, then Walton's violin concerto with Frank Peter Zimmermann, then Rachmaninov's Second Symphony in E minor. He wrote that symphony in Dresden, a decade after his First had been taken apart in Petersburg, and its slow movement is a tune most people can hum without being able to name. Ivan Repušić conducts the Staatskapelle.
