Verdi-Requiem

Verdi wrote it in 1874 for the first anniversary of Manzoni's death, and it is a requiem by a man who had spent forty years in the theatre: the Dies irae arrives with bass drum and four trumpets placed around the hall. Hans von Bülow dismissed it unheard as an opera in ecclesiastical costume, then apologised in writing eighteen years later.
