Bruckner gave his Fourth the nickname Romantic and then revised it for the better part of a decade, leaving conductors a choice of scores rather than a text. What survives every version is the opening: a horn call over a string tremolo, one of the great first thirty seconds in the repertoire. César Franck's Le Chasseur maudit opens the evening.
