About Weimarer Stadtlauf
Eleven kilometres through the old town and the Ilm park, run on the Saturday of the Onion Market — inside the festival rather than against it.
A lap of the classical town, twice
The course is a single loop of roughly five and a half kilometres, covered twice for the main run. About half of it is tarmac through the middle of town; the other half runs on the made paths of the Park an der Ilm, past the meadow and Goethe's garden house. It is, incidentally, an efficient way to see the whole of central Weimar inside an hour.
Not only the main run
A relay for pairs covers the same ground, and there are children's races from four hundred metres upwards. Entry is by registration rather than on the day, and the window closes well before the weekend itself.
Running through a market
The run is not scheduled against the Zwiebelmarkt but inside it: around two thousand runners moving through streets that are already full of stalls and onion ropes. Whether that sounds like the best or the worst possible day to race is a matter of temperament, and the field suggests most people find it the former.
