About Marktplatz
The market square does what its name says, and it does it on most days of the year — which makes it the one place in Weimar where the working town and the monument town stand in the same space, history at street level with a stall in front of it.
Six days a week, and then the big ones
The weekly market stands here six days out of seven. On top of that the large markets take the square in turn: spring and autumn, the Töpfermarkt in September — the opening is at ten, and the Thuringian potters' guild hands over its Goldene Kammschiene — and in October the Zwiebelmarkt, which the city calls its largest festival.
The Cranach house at Markt 11/12
At Markt 11/12 stands the Renaissance house that carries Lucas Cranach the Elder's name; he spent his last months in Weimar and died here in 1553. A private theatre plays in its vaults today, which is a fair summary of how this square works — nothing is preserved so carefully that it stops being used.
