Four squares, and you walk between them

The Marktplatz, the Herderplatz at the town church, the Theaterplatz with the rink in front of the theatre, and the Goetheplatz. The pleasure of Weimar's scale is that this is one continuous walk rather than four separate outings — the old town is lit end to end, and the stalls and Glühwein huts run the whole way from the market square to the theatre.

It opens before Advent and stays past New Year

The market opens before Advent begins and stays up past New Year. A shopping Sunday falls in the first weeks. It also means the quiet January end of it is a completely different experience from the crowded December middle.

More than the stalls

Craft, an ice rink and a family programme are spread across the centre rather than concentrated in one place, which is the reason the whole thing rewards a wander instead of a destination. Satellite markets turn up elsewhere in town as well.
