Theaterplatz
The square in front of the Deutsches Nationaltheater, by the Goethe-Schiller monument. It carries the Easter and specialty markets, the Kunstfest's festival centre, and the Christmas ice rink.
About Theaterplatz
This is the square Weimar uses when it wants everyone in one place, and the city's own listings call it the town's most central. Whatever is happening here, Goethe and Schiller are in the photograph somewhere.
What stands on it
The Deutsches Nationaltheater is at Theaterplatz 2 and gives the square its name; in front of it Goethe and Schiller share a plinth. On the theatre itself hangs the republic's memorial tablet, which most people cross the square without noticing. Behind all three, in what the city calls the square's hinterland, lies the Künstlergarten — the quietest thing about the address.
The year turns here
The Easter market and the Thuringian specialty market take the square in spring. In summer the Kunstfest opens on it — a crowd filling the space, a dancer in front of a wall of screens. From the end of November there is an ice rink at the feet of the two poets.
