About Kunstfest Weimar
The festival calls itself Central Germany's largest for the contemporary arts, and it takes the whole city as its stage for a fortnight at the turn from August into September.
Everything at once, everywhere
Music and theatre, dance and visual art, literature and work made for public space — the programme refuses to specialise, and the city is the venue rather than any one house. That is a serious proposition in a town whose cultural year is otherwise organised around the eighteenth century.
The close of the Weimar summer
The city frames it as both the climax and the end of the Weimarer Sommer, and as much a party as a programme: the festival centre on the Theaterplatz is where audiences and artists, residents and visitors are meant to end up in the same place. It is the point in the year when the town stops performing its own history for a fortnight.
Where you will find it
The Deutsches Nationaltheater is host and organiser both, the Staatskapelle plays in the Weimarhalle, the Gaswerk takes an exhibition, and performances, readings and installations turn up around the town. The programme changes completely from year to year, so the venue list is a shape rather than a promise.
