About Genius Loci Weimar
Three September nights in which artists project onto the city's own buildings — free, outdoors, and gone by morning.
The building is the material, not the screen
The premise is narrower than most projection festivals and better for it. Artists are given a specific Weimar facade and make work that answers that surface — its windows, its mouldings, its history and the way it is normally looked at. The pieces cannot travel, because they were made for one wall.
Three buildings for 2026
The festival names the Nike Temple on the Goetheplatz, the House of the Weimar Republic, and Schiller's house — the residence built in 1777 that Schiller acquired in 1802. Projecting onto the front of a poet's house is a fair statement of what this festival is for: the surface carries the argument.
Gone by morning, in a town that keeps everything
The work runs for three nights and then ceases to exist, which puts the festival in an odd and deliberate relationship with a city whose entire business is preservation. Nothing is ticketed and nothing is behind a barrier — you walk between the sites in the dark with everyone else.
