Kunstfest Weimar
27 August – 12 September 2027
Late August into early September
Central Germany's largest festival of contemporary arts, closing the city's summer at the turn from August into September.
The city's young theatre, playing in the west wing of the main station — the only theatre in Germany with a railway station of its own.
The only theatre in Germany with a railway station attached — the house's own claim, and it survives checking. The stellwerk plays in the west wing of Weimar's main station, to an audience of up to eighty, and everyone on its stage is young. In 2026 it took the federal theatre prize in the category of independent production houses, which is the sort of recognition that usually goes to houses ten times its size.
The auditorium seats up to eighty people and sits inside the KulturBahnhof — trains still arrive on the other side of the wall. Since 2019 the company has had a second space to work in, a rehearsal stage in the Schwungfabrik on a reused industrial site, which is what let it grow without leaving the station.
Kathrin Schremb founded the company in October 1999, then called D.A.S. Jugendtheater, and in April 2002 it moved into the station building it is now named after. It is run as an association, with Stefanie Heiner directing the artistic side and Julia Heinrich the commercial one.
Every production here is cast from young people — roughly a hundred children, teenagers and young adults take part in any given season — and the programme flatly refuses to be a children's programme because of it. Die Verwandlung and Der zerbrochene Krug share the season with Die NSU-Monologe, Weiße Rose – Stimmen des Widerstands, and a Faust II that goes under the title Game Over.
Nothing dated on this day — the standing offers run regardless.
