The market that opens Weimar's season, on the weekend before Easter — the Marktplatz around the Neptune fountain, and the Theaterplatz besides.
The first market of the year
Craft makers and traders set up around the decorated Neptune fountain to put the town in the mood for Easter, and the catering matters as much as the stalls. Coming after a Thuringian winter, the first weekend anyone can reasonably stand outside with a drink is an event in its own right, whatever is being sold.
It has outgrown its square
The Marktplatz alone no longer holds it, so the Theaterplatz is added, with more craftspeople and food stalls. That makes it the same two-square shape as the bigger autumn markets — a walk between rather than a single destination.
The Sunday is a shopping Sunday
Shops in the town centre open on the Sunday of the market weekend, which is rare enough in Germany to be worth planning around: it is one of the few days a visitor can combine the market with the shops rather than choosing between them.
