About Goetheplatz

The square was laid out in 1800, on the line of the medieval town wall, and went by the name Karlsplatz then; a fire-engine house stood where the mon ami is now. It is the working square among Weimar's public spaces: when the market square is taken, the weekly market moves here, and at Christmas the Goetheplatz is the craft end of the Weimarer Weihnacht rather than its postcard. At number 11 the Jugend- und Kulturzentrum mon ami runs its halls and the municipal cinema, which keeps the square busy on evenings when nothing else is on.
