Selling, and showing how it is done

The stalls are not only shops: the craft is demonstrated as well as sold, which changes what you are looking at. Pottery is the one trade where watching the making for five minutes tells you what the price on the label is actually for.

Two markets, one walk

It shares its weekend with the Thüringer Genuss- und Spezialmarkt on the Theaterplatz next door, and the city sets them in parallel deliberately. Ceramics on the market square, food and drink at the theatre end, one square to the next — a single circuit rather than two outings.

Small, and better for it

Measured against the Zwiebelmarkt a month later this is a modest affair, and that is the appeal: there is room to stand at a table and talk to the person who threw the pot, which is not possible on a weekend when the whole town is full.
