About Monatsmarkt
On a few dates across the summer the market square carries more than its usual weekday trade — the standing weekly market, broadened out with everything it does not normally sell.
What it adds to the weekly market
Flowers and plants, regional food, floristry and craft work, toys, ceramics, gifts, costume jewellery, leather goods, clothing, small textiles and a long tail of ordinary household things. The weekly market sells what you eat this week; the monthly one sells what you furnish a life with, which makes it a different kind of browse on the same stones.
Aimed at residents, which is the reason to catch it
It runs a handful of times a year on the same square, from nine to three, and it is not advertised to visitors — the city lists it in its market calendar and nowhere else. That makes it one of the few mornings when the square is doing its actual job rather than performing for anyone.
