16–18 September 2026
An international building-materials conference held in Weimar by the Bauhaus-Universität's materials institute, and one of the longest-running scientific meetings the city hosts.
For three days the congress hall belongs to inorganic binders, concrete durability, recycling and the materials walls and floors are made of — over three hundred specialist papers. A visitor will not attend it, but it explains why hotel rooms vanish in the middle of September, and it is a straightforward answer to what this town does when it is not being the classical one.
It is run by the F. A. Finger Institute for Building Materials Science at the Bauhaus-Universität — the school that descends from the art school Gropius took over. The institution that gave the world a design manifesto also runs a serious materials-science department, and the conference is where that shows. The two things sit in the same city under the same name and almost never in the same sentence.
The conference has run since 1964. The town's continuity is usually told through poets; this is the same continuity in a field where nobody thinks to look for it.
