The International Louis Spohr Competition for young violinists was founded in 1995 at the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar, and takes players up to the age of 21 in three age groups. The closing concert is the part worth knowing about: the best of each round traditionally play it with the Staatskapelle Weimar, which is a considerable thing to have behind you before you are twenty-one. The competition is named for Louis Spohr (1784–1859), who worked in Thuringia as concertmaster and conductor in Gotha, Erfurt and Nordhausen — one of the great virtuosos of his day, and also a teacher and an organiser of civic musical life.
