About Frauenplan

A small square with a large address. Frauenplan 1 is Goethe's house — his main residence from 1782 until his death in 1832, a baroque building of 1709 that his heirs opened as a museum in 1885 — and it is the reason most visitors come to this corner of Weimar at all. The square outside is not kept as a museum piece, though. At the end of August, around Goethe's birthday, the Weinfest takes it over for four days — the city's promise for those days is music and a glass raised to Goethe in company, which is a more cheerful way to mark a poet than a wreath would be.
