About Weinfest

Four days of wine on the Frauenplan, laid out around the date so that the toast falls on Goethe's birthday, in front of his own front door.

The square does most of the work

The Frauenplan is small and Goethe's house takes up one side of it. Put a wine village of stalls and music in front of a building somebody lived in for fifty years and you get an atmosphere no purpose-built festival ground can manufacture — the setting is the programme, and the wine is only the reason to stand in it.

Timed to a birthday

Goethe was born on 28 August, and the festival is arranged so that the day falls inside it. Toasting a writer outside his own house is the kind of thing that could be unbearable and somehow is not, mostly because the town does it for itself rather than for visitors.
