Weimarer Meisterkurse
Next date to be announced
Two weeks from late July into early August, every summer
A fortnight of international master classes at the conservatory — and the public gets to sit in on the concerts.
An international music academy of around 850 students whose concert series run through the academic year.
A music academy of around 850 students from more than fifty countries — and, for a visitor, a steady supply of live music. The concert calendar runs right through the academic year, much of it open to anyone who turns up, which is why the name on a Weimar poster is so often a student's.
The proposal for a music school in Weimar came from the nineteenth century's biggest musical celebrity: Franz Liszt, pianist, composer and teacher, who spent years of his working life in this town. The Hochschule that carries his name counts its tradition from 1872, and the connection is not merely commemorative — the Franz-Liszt-Zentrum and the competitions in his name are part of what it does.
The main building is the Fürstenhaus on the Platz der Demokratie, the same square as the Anna Amalia Library. Teaching also runs at the hochschulzentrum am Horn and out at Belvedere, in houses named for Beethoven, Bach and Haydn, with a studio theatre among them.
Class concerts on piano, flute, violin and cello, debut recitals and masterclass evenings fill the calendar, most of them in the Festsaal of the Fürstenhaus or the Forum Seebach. When the school leaves its own walls it turns up in the Weimarhalle, in the municipal cinema at mon ami and in the Hotel Elephant — three addresses a visitor is likely to pass anyway.
