About Gasthaus Zum weißen Schwan

Gasthaus Zum weißen Schwan has been trading at this address for more than four and a half centuries, directly across the street from the door Goethe used every day. The cooking is Thuringian, and there has been plenty of time to settle how.

Goethe on the menu, by the house's own account

The house says Goethe ate here often,[1] and it has never let the connection go: there is a Tafelspitz on the card sold as his favourite dish and a cake plate under his name, and it quotes a line it attributes to him about the Swan welcoming you at any hour with open wings. The geography is certain: he lived across the street, and this was the nearest table to his desk.

Among Europe's oldest inns, by its own count

Four hundred and fifty years is the figure the house gives itself,[1] and on the strength of it claims a place among the oldest inns still serving anywhere in Europe. Much of the old frontage is still standing. The Schwarze Bär on the market square gives 1540 and calls itself Weimar's oldest; the two claims are not in conflict — the town has more than one very old house still in business.

Questions visitors ask

Did Goethe really eat at the Zum weißen Schwan?
Reportedly, yes — he's said to have been a regular guest, a Tafelspitz is sold as his favourite dish, and a line about the Swan welcoming guests "with open wings" is quoted as his. The geography is certain: Goethe lived directly across the street, at the address now the Goethe-Nationalmuseum.
How old is the Gasthaus Zum weißen Schwan?
More than 450 years by its own account, which puts it among the oldest inns still serving anywhere in Europe. Much of the old frontage is still standing.
Is it the oldest inn in Weimar?
Not necessarily — a claimed 450-plus years would put it among Europe's oldest, but the Schwarze Bär on the market square gives 1540 and calls itself Weimar's oldest. The two aren't in conflict: more than one very old house is still trading here.
