About Restaurant Shakespeares

Restaurant Shakespeares, the Restauration Shakespeares of its own sign, is a restaurant with a small stage in the middle of the old town, at Windischenstraße 4–6: the Galli Theater Weimar has played in the house since 2005, so an evening here can be dinner and a comedy under one roof.[1][2] The name is a small argument about Weimar — that Shakespeare, rediscovered here by Wieland and brought to the stage by Goethe, is the greatest import in German intellectual history.[1] Tables are reserved by telephone or in person, and there is a menu for children.[3][4]

The Galli Theater in the house, since 2005

Since 2005 the Galli Theater Weimar has played in this house: comedies by Johannes Galli, the company's founder and the author of every piece it stages, who called himself a philosophising clown. The theatre and the restaurant offer their evenings together, under the motto that art and cooking meet at their most delicious, and the pair take bookings for birthdays, company parties, anniversaries and Christmas parties; the theatre's programme runs from an evening piece to a children's play at the weekend.[2][5]

Why Shakespeare, in Weimar

The house makes its own case for the name. It was Wieland, in Weimar, who rediscovered the forgotten English dramatist for German readers; the translations of Schlegel and Tieck and Goethe's work on the stage founded Shakespeare's world fame; and since 1904 the oldest Shakespeare monument on the continent has stood in the Park an der Ilm. The house also likes to recall Kenneth Branagh on the stage of the Nationaltheater, striking the pose of Hamlet and saying that Shakespeare is a German writer.[1]

Booking a table

Reservations are taken by telephone or at the house, so that the right table can be found together; there is a children's menu.[3][4]
