Goethekaufhaus
The department store on the Theaterplatz corner — built 1996 on the site of an 1896 furniture house, run by the Konsumgenossenschaft Weimar.
The Goethekaufhaus holds the corner of the Theaterplatz at number 2a, its rounded front carrying Goethe's name in script. The site's retail history goes back to 1896, when the upholsterer Friedrich August Bosse put up a building here; after reunification the old house was demolished in 1995 and the present Goethekaufhaus built by 1996.[^wiki-goethekaufhaus] Like the Schillerkaufhaus it belongs to the Konsumgenossenschaft Weimar, a cooperative of around six thousand members.[^wiki-goethekaufhaus]
A trading corner since 1896
Friedrich August Bosse, an upholsterer, built on this spot in 1896; the corner has been selling ever since. The present house of 1996 gathers shops from groceries to fashion behind its glass floors, with the square, the theatre and the Goethe–Schiller monument outside its doors.
