At home Nicky is the adult: she is the one who keeps the household standing, which is why the thought occurs to her that she and her mother were swapped at birth. So she leaves. She is taken in by Gabriella, once an opera singer, and the two of them play theatre and range around the city together — until Nicky notices that something behind the large manner is going: Gabriella's memory is slipping.
