For two centuries Weimar has described itself by its thinking and its writing, and this evening asks what that description leaves out: what the high culture stood on, and whose labour it quietly assumed. Ivana Sokola wrote the text, the music is Mahler's and other people's, and the house calls the result a conjuring — which is the right word, since you summon ghosts when you want a word with them. Valentin Schwarz directs, Emanuel Winter has the musical direction.

Historical periods
The "spirit of Weimar" the evening cross-examines is the one the classical decades built.
For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
