About Die Hochzeit des Figaro

Mozart and Da Ponte compressed Beaumarchais's banned comedy into one mad day in which the servants outmanoeuvre their count. Written in 1786, when a piece about aristocratic entitlement losing to the people below stairs was genuinely risky. The second-act finale runs some twenty minutes without a break and is still, by common consent, the most perfectly built stretch in all opera.
