Foster is at home on the world's large opera stages and a yearly guest on Bayreuth's Green Hill, and this evening is a homecoming: the DNT is where she first sang the great Wagner scenes she brings back, and the programme runs from Tristan und Isolde to Götterdämmerung. The orchestra behind her has its own claim on the composer — it gave Lohengrin its first performance in 1850, with Liszt conducting, while Wagner himself was in exile and could not be in the hall. Corby Welch and Sarah Ferede sing with her; Daniel Carter conducts.

Historical periods
The Lohengrin premiere of 1850 belongs to the Silver Age, when Liszt was making this house a stage for work no one else would risk.
Goethe died in 1832, and Weimar had to work out what a town does after its golden age. It decided to keep going, and the answer took eighty-six years — the era the Klassik Stiftung Weimar calls the Silver Age. Music replaced literature as the thing Weimar was for, two royal patrons paid for it, and the schools they founded outlived the monarchy that funded them.
