The house files this one under a wonderfully arch subtitle: the secret archive of the peculiar productions of J. W. G. What it is, in its own description, is a musical-literary programme of poems and letters that were kept under lock and key, either by Goethe himself or by the people who took charge of his poetry afterwards. That second clause is the interesting one. A national poet is edited by his executors as much as by himself, and an evening built out of what they suppressed says as much about German respectability as about the man. An actor and a musician, in a vaulted room, which is the right amount of privacy for it.
