About Theater im Gewölbe

A private theatre has been working in the Cranach house on the market square since 2002, and it bills itself as Weimar's Klassik-Bühne. The room decides the experience: a Renaissance hall of about a hundred seats under the cross vaults of the oldest Renaissance house in town, close enough that nothing an actor does goes unseen. What gets played there is, with very few exceptions, the town's own golden age.

Under the vaults of the Cranach house

The address is Markt 11/12, the building carries Lucas Cranach the Elder's name, and the theatre works in its ground-floor vaults with the market square outside the door. A hundred seats sets the terms for everything else the house does: the classical repertoire gets played here at conversational distance, which is not how most theatres can do it.

A repertoire that is almost entirely Goethe

Three separate Faust evenings run in the same season, beside the young Werther, Lotte in Weimar, an evening on the four women in Goethe's household and another on the erotic Goethe. Schiller gets his share and Kleist appears, but the centre of gravity never moves: this is Goethe played in the same small old town as the house he lived in, for audiences who quite likely passed it on the way.

Something on almost every night

The house counts, in its own words, more than thirty productions and a good five hundred performances a year, which puts it among what it calls the region's defining professional stages. For a private theatre with one small hall those are working numbers, not a boast — they mean something is on almost every evening you might be in town.
